David and I went to the orchard this past weekend, with Erin and Doug and Olivia. First we had lunch after church, then drove on down to Wilsonapos;s for apples and pumpkins.

havenapos;t done much apple-picking there before. Usually I just go to the pre-picked apples in the store and not worry about going out to get apples off the tree. We did that picking thing this year, though. It took a little while to find some trees with apples on them, but then had a good time discovering good apples.

I think one of the wonderful things about apples from the orchard are that they are not like the perfectly formed, shiny fruit you get in a grocery store most of the time. These are misshapen and interesting to look at, and there are so many varieties I even picked one that is called Sheepnose.

didnapos;t get to pick pumpkins from the patch this year, though; pumpkins didnapos;t do so well because of the flooding, and the orchard had a total crop failure. Still, they had pumpkins around that they had purchased elsewhere, so we bought a couple carving pumpkins. They didnapos;t have any pie pumpkins, though, so I figured Iapos;d just have to do the canned pumpkin thing this year.

additional things we got on our annual fall spree, apart from the apples and the pumpkins, were some apple turnovers, apple cider, and sour cherry jam. Plus then we went into IC to Whiteyapos;s and got some ice cream with the gift certificate I got last Christmas that I didnapos;t want to have expire. We havenapos;t actually eaten any of the ice cream yet, but we might start in on it this weekend.

all in all, very satisfying and enjoyable.
